Towards the end of the 1960s in Naples, there seemed to be concern about reviving the tradition of Piedigrotta, an ancient popular festival that falls on 8 September. Enzo Mazzeo recalls how in 1969 the Tourist Board organised a film competition. It was won by one of the liveliest realities in the city's cultural world, the Cine Club Napoli, with the film 'Una notte di Piedigrotta', of which we see an extract. The film, directed by Alfredo Scognamiglio, was shot by the young Enzo and Franco Vergine. The highly contrasted images of the fireworks and illuminations on the ships in the Gulf of Naples, filmed at night in black and white, rather than the chronicle or promotion of the event, transfigure the festivity, making it an evanescent phenomenon, almost as if the appearance of these forms takes us somewhere else, to a hellhole or the hall of a film club.
