Among many children's birthdays, this time it is the grandfather who takes centre stage. Mario can be very pleased to blow out 69 candles on 30 August 1954. And indeed, he clearly is. He is grandfather and uncle to many grandchildren who surround him celebrating on this special day in Naples, at the home of the Longo family. In 1954, life expectancy in Italy is around 67 years, so Grandpa Mario is at a good age, having already passed this milestone. In the future, the average life expectancy will become much longer and exceed 80 years. These averages may seem low, but we must still remember that even a century earlier, in 1872, life expectancy was not even 30 years and at the end of the war, in 1945, not even 55 years. In the 9.5mm film, we see the cutting of the cake and the toast, but the film is obviously silent, and so we imagine the congratulations and cheers. Long live Grandpa Mario!
