At 10:39 p.m. on 9 October 1963, a landslide broke off from Mount Toc and crashed into the artificial hydroelectric reservoir of the Vajont stream in the valley of the same name (on the border between Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto), causing a wave to overtake the dam, destroying the village of Longarone and causing the death of 1910 people. The variation in water pressure on the slope of Mount Toc was the cause of the disaster, but the responsibility for the tragedy lay with the designers and managers of SADE, the body managing the work, who concealed the unsuitability of the slopes of the basin, which were at hydrogeological risk. A disaster that was not only foreseeable but foretold. Massimo Da Vià, Zolio's son, remembers that the next morning he filmed the places hit and devastated by the gigantic wave, of which we show two short excerpts, one in black and white and the other in colour: 'my father took an 8mm camera from the shop and, on a Lambretta scooter with a friend of his, from Domegge, they reached Longarone. Something had happened in the night, there had been a big thunderclap and the sound of sirens and helicopters... Maybe the first images, or among the first, or who cares.... We wish they were the last'.
